Green roofs must meet the same requirements for fire safety as traditional roofs. In addition, green roofs must also meet requirements for drainage, to ensure that the water can be directed away from the building.
Sedum roofs from Nature Impact has achieved BROOF (t2) fire approval, which means that the roof can be used in buildings subject to the BR18 building regulations.
The roof and other parts of a building are subject to the fire safety requirements of the building regulations to ensure, among other things, that there is minimal risk of the fire spreading from buildings to neighbouring buildings. The greatest challenge for green roofs can be that plants grow bigger over time, and hence can encroach on adjacent buildings. This can be a challenge for green roofs with some grass types, but not with the sedum plants that are used in green roofs from Nature Impact. They do not grow high, and do not burn well.
Sedum roofs with fire-protection materials
Nature Impact’s green roofs have been given fire approval because we use soil and sedum plants with low fire risk, as well as fire-retardant plastic trays approved for the purpose.
It’s also important to have fire requirements in sight when mounting sedum roofs. Naturally, the chosen roof underlay must comply with the fire requirements that are contained in the building regulations, so the overall construction is BROOF (t2) approved. If you’re unsure, therefore, it’s important that you request the relevant documents from the roofing felt manufacturer, for example, if this is what is used as a water-tight membrane underneath the sedum trays.
Always choose a green roof with fire approval
It’s important to make sure that the green roof you choose has fire approval equivalent to BROOF (t2), which all sedum roofs from Nature Impact have. It’s also important to work with an architect, a fire safety adviser and/or a professional installer of green roofs to make sure that the installation meets the fire requirements in the BR18 building regulations. This ensures you get an attractive and fire-retardant green roof, which complies with all fire requirements of the building regulations.
