Vejle Psychiatry

A green approach was taken when Vejle’s psychiatric hospital was constructed

The new Psychiatric Department in Vejle opened its doors to staff, patients, and relatives in 2017 after a three-year construction period.

The 17,400 m² building is located near Vejle Hospital and is connected to it by both a tunnel and a footbridge.

The psychiatric department is a versatile treatment facility, offering 100 beds, child and adolescent psychiatry, and a psychiatric emergency room. The construction of the psychiatric department is a PPP collaboration between private companies and the public sector. The result is an unconventional building complex, with green roofs emphasizing an organic and natural architecture.

Nature and Well-being

In all parts of the building, user well-being has been a priority—both indoors and outdoors. The new psychiatric department opens up new treatment methods to benefit patients. There has been an increased focus on a dignified treatment environment, including physical activity options and incorporating nature into patient care.

Nature and greenery have a beneficial effect on people—we become calmer, more relaxed, and generally feel better. Researchers call this effect the Biophilia Hypothesis, and significant research is being conducted on all the positive effects of nature on human well-being.

The building’s green roofs blend beautifully with the scenic surroundings of Vejle Ådal, the local area for the department and patients. The roofs thus help create a framework for well-being for both patients and staff.
