AARhus in AARHUS

Nature Close at Hand

Ulla Hornsyld, Landscape Architect at BIG. Part of the designing team behind the building of AARhus with natural green roofs.

In 2019, the innovative building, AARhus, was opened on the harbour front in Aarhus. The architectural company BIG is behind the iconic, 65-metre-tall building, which contains a total of 247 apartments.

The split-level floors of the building and its well thought out plan provides all residents of AARhus with a fantastic view of the water or the beautiful green roofs supplied by Nature Impact.

As an essential element of the building’s design residents of AARhus should have nature close at hand. You should be able to see greenery, fused by city and nature in the architecture. For Ulla Hornsyld, Landscape Architect at BIG, the solution was clear. The building should have green roofs:

“The green roofs bring nature close to the apartments, even when you are high up. When you look out, greenery and planting meet your eyes, rather than black roofing membranes. It increases the quality of everyday life.”

Functional aesthetics

As a landscape architect, Ulla Hornsyld is conscious of both aesthetics and function concerning the outdoor areas. Her choice of green roofs was not solely an architectural decision.

Green roofs improve biodiversity, so plants, birds and insects thrive better. The microclimate for the residents of AARhus is also improved, and the roofs retain rainwater protecting the street level sewer system against overflowing. Finally, the green roofs add something down-to-earth to the magnificent building with its soaring architecture.

A flexible and innovative solution

Nature Impact supplied 1,400 m2 of green roof to the AARhus building. Ulla Hornsyld chose the solution based on the systems flexibility. Easy to install with efficiency and safety in mind.

“The solution is smart and very easy to work with. The green roof at AARhus is divided between several larger and smaller areas. It was a bonus that the planters could be installed together as needed”, says Ulla Hornsyld.

At Nature Impact, we are proud to have played a small part in AARhus, which draws the admiration of both residents and tourists at Aarhus harbour.
