Salling Roofgarden

A green wall creates eye-catcher from street level

To draw attention to the new Roof Garden on the top of Salling, a 65 sq m plant wall has been mounted on the side of the building. The plant wall, which has been supplied and installed by Nature Impact, hangs like an overspill of plant materials from the roof garden all the way down to the pedestrian area. Landscape architect Caroline Grenaa Németh from Henning Larsen Architects states:

“The idea behind the establishment of the plant wall is that we wish to create a visually clear and attractive connection between the street area and the Roof Garden in the form of a green and luxuriant feature. No-one can see there’s a roof garden up there. Therefore, we’ve incorporated an eye-catcher, which directs the eye up towards the roof garden at the very top on the 6th floor.”

More greenery in the city

When more than half of the world’s population live in cities, and things are still developing in that direction, people are getting further and further away from the earth and nature. Green areas are being squeezed out by buildings. Plant walls can be part of the solution to get more greenery embedded in the cities, and create small oases.

“By making use of the city’s facades, the city’s fauna and flora can be increased considerably, while this brings the city’s residents closer to nature in their everyday life. The aim of the Salling Roof Garden’s new plant wall was to create experience of nature and an eye-catcher, and to bring biodiversity to the facade”, says Caroline Grenaa Németh.

She continues: “The integration of the green plant wall in the building has an aesthetic quality, which is lovely to look at in both summer and winter. With the choice of plants, therefore, we can support general biodiversity over an extended period.”

2,200 plants are watered via an app

You need a lot of plants as well as technology to get a green wall like this to stand perfectly straight. In total, there are about 2,200 plants in the 65 sq m plant wall. On top of this is the watering system, which is controlled via an app, which sends a message to the drip hoses in the troughs of the plant wall. Our watering system is controlled by an app, so we can keep an eye on it 24/7 and make sure the plants get the right amount of water and fertiliser.
